The meissing middle framework is taken from the book [[https://www.perlego.com/book/837435/human-machine-reimagining-work-in-the-age-of-ai-pdf|Human + Machine]] by Paul R. Daugherty and H. James Wilson. 

>"In the missing middle, humans work with smart machines to exploit what each party does best.  Humans, for example, are needed to develop, train and manage various AI applications.  In doing so, they are //enabling// those systems to function as true collaborative partners.  For their part, machines in the missing middle are helping people to punch above their weight, providing them with superhuman capabilities."

Posessing the skills that complement the computer is essential for a successful career, as noted in [[https://tylercowen.com/average-is-over/|Tyler Cowen's "Average is Over"]] (2013):

> "If you and your skills are a complement to the computer, your wage and labour market prospects are likely to be cheery.  If your skills do not complement the computer, you may want to address that mismatch.  Ever more people are starting to fall on one side of the divide or the other.  That's why the average is over."

With AI technologies the capabilities of the computer are changing, which means that the complementary skills that we need to develop also need to change.
